The Best Tulamben Diving Spots
Bali Indonesia has long been known as a holiday destination. With Gili Islands and Lombok becoming trendy it is starting to find a place to escape the tourists…. And that is where Tulamben comes in.
This is definitely a must do for anyone planning on doing a little diving in Bali. If you are still new to diving or would class yourself as a beginner then this is a great way to gain experience on what is easily a world class wreck dive site.
However, if you are an experienced diver we recommend exploring the deeper areas of the wreck. Venture out to about 35m and you will come across a coral covered bow gun and other long forgotten artifacts.
Be advised to bring your camera because throughout the wreck you will find the odd pygmy seahorse, Trevallies, Blacktip Reef Sharks scouting the area and more. If you swim over to the sandier areas you can often catch the dancing eels or maybe a hiding sweetlip or two.
Tulamben Diving Review
The Liberty Wreck is a great spot to dive but it is not the only dive location worth mentioning in this part of Indonesia.
Another good Scuba site is the Tulamben Wall, other wise known as the “Drop Off”. Just a few Kms south east of the wreck but north west of the wall, near Kubu village you will find a beautiful coral garden reef formation that is well worth a visit. Both the Tulamben Wall and the Kubu Coral Garden are ideal for beginners, are good for underwater photography and also make good Night diving locations.
How most people Scuba Dive Tulamben
How many people come to Bali just to scuba dive? You would be surprised just how many do just that. The majority of people come from south Bali on a daytrip to join an organized Tulamben Diving Tour. This way it is all arranged, they fit 2 or 3 dives into the day and it’s all stress free. Holidays in Indonesia should always be as stress free as possible.
The early morning dive is usually on the USS Liberty Ship Wreck and then on the the Tulamben Wall just before lunch. Then after lunch most return to the Liberty wreck for further exploration… There is a lot to see here… Take our word for it.. It will take two scuba dives at the wreck just to scratch the surface.
Best time for Tulamben Diving
Think early, late or night. Seriously, we advise you to dive as early in the morning or leave it till later in the afternoon. Or even wait till night and try a night dive.
Believe me when I say the USS Liberty Ship Wreck can quickly get swamped with daytripping scuba divers during ‘rush hour (somewhere between 10 am and 2 pm).
Where to stay?
We have used many of the larger booking sites in the past (Bookings, Expedia, Agoda etc)
Now we always use the one to book our accommodation. They look at all the deals the other sites are running and lets you chose.. What can be easier?
It is simple, painless and in our experience, always the lowest rates so saves us money.. That’s always a good thing…
Scuba Diving conditions
You don’t need to worry about murky Balinese water at this location, We have never known the water to be anything but clear with little to no current at all. The Indonesian water at this location are perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving.
If you are more into snorkeling then scuba diving then no problems. The Liberty wreck at it’s shallowest point is at a depth of around 4 m. At this depth it can be snorkeled but be warned, you will need to be fit because the beach is close to 40 m away and you can get tired easily.
The other option is to hire a small outrigger. The operator will will wait for you as you snorkel all you want and then take you back to shore when you are done.
