New Imported Virus cases in China

China is stepping up scrutiny of inbound foreigners and tightening border control after the number of single-day imported coronavirus cases set a record, helping double the daily number of newly detected infections.

China has reported 99 NEW confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus, of which 97 were imported into the country from abroad. The number reported on Sunday represents the highest daily increase in imported cases yet recorded, surpassing the previous high of 67 new imported cases recorded on 25 March.

That number prompted Beijing to ban all foreign arrivals into the country, including those with valid visas and residency permits from 28 March. These measures currently remain in place.

Forty-nine new suspected cases, all imported, were also reported on the Chinese mainland on Sunday. Two domestically transmitted cases were recorded, both in north-eastern Heilongjiang province along the Russian border where an outbreak in Suifenhe has put parts of the border city on lockdown.

So far there have been 82,052 confirmed cases in China, where the virus originated last year, and 3,339 deaths. After calls from experts around the world, China changed the way it was reporting the numbers of its coronavirus cases earlier in April to include asymptomatic cases.

The total number of asymptomatic cases recorded in China since the outbreak began has not been released, but Wu Zunyou, the country's chief epidemiologist, said such cases accounted for 4.4%of the total confirmed patients.

In an apparent response to criticism of mistreatment of foreigners, officials in Guangzhou said it treats foreigners and Chinese nationals equally in enforcing anti-virus measures.
